Learn Songwriting
Published in Library Binding by Edu Dev (April, 2002)
Authors: Caroline Hooper, Neil Francis, Jane Chisholm, Eileen O'Brien, Howard Allman, and Nigel M. Hooper
Average review score:

excellent resource
I highly recommend this tool. Less weighty than many similar texts, Learn Songwriting takes you over the basics, and shows you how to proof your music before you take it to the market. A must for the novice songwriter, and anyone who is looking to branch out into a new field of creative writing. Also recommend Sheila Davis' series.

a fantastic read
this is an excellent book - one of the best I have come across. I have usually found songwriting books dense and unreadable - but this explains the process clearly with good references and clear explanations. A must for any budding songwriters out there.

Making It in the "Free World": Women in Transition from Prison (Suny Series in Women, Crime, and Criminology)
Published in Hardcover by State Univ of New York Pr (March, 2001)
Author: Patricia O'Brien
Average review score:

Powerful stories of former women prisoner's struggle outside
Based on Dr. O'Brien's thoughtful research, this book was a fascinating look into the lives of women as they struggled to create a new life for themselves after serving their sentences in prison. This is clearly an academic book, but stories the women tell in their own words are quite moving. They relate desperate efforts to make it on the outside, in many cases so that they can be reunited with their children. I found Dr. O'Brien's discussion of what these women have to teach us to be quite thought-provoking. She makes excellent use of theory to help make the reader understand ways we can view the aftermath of prison life. She also convincingly urges practitioners to take a more proactive stance when working with non-recidivist women (and makes suggestions which may help pracitioners assist more women to avoid the revolving door back into prison life by helping the reader to better understand and to identify needs of this population and more responsive to these needs of these women). In addition, I was ver interested in her suggestions of ways to change policies -- especially alternatives to imprisonment (which could also better serve the children of women who are now sent hundreds of miles away to serve their sentences and denied regular access to their children).

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the impact of the USA's criminal justice system on women and children. This topic is all too often ignored in the ever-increasing discussions of sentencing guidelines. This book is a giant step forward in helping us all to better understand how the transition from prison life can be facilitated or barricaded for women. The voices of the women in this book need to be heard!

A Major Contribution
There are many books on female offenders and women in prison but none previously to my knowledge on women in transition following imprisonment. Making It in the "Free World" admirably fills this gap. Read this book and hear the stories of women who have made it on the outside; read about the hurdles set by an uncaring system before them. This book is a must read for politicians, proabation officers, and social workers.Well written and compelling reading.

Notebooks 1935-1951
Published in Paperback by Marlowe & Company (September, 1998)
Authors: Albert Camus, Philip Malcolm Waller Thody, and Justin O'Brien
Average review score:

Great insight to his work
This novel , more like a autobiography is great because in it he tells of certain unforgetable conversations and ideas that his mind has come up with. It just makes me want to read more of his work because now i know how he gets some of his ideas and the process he goes through in creating a grea novel. Although the notes are written in a form that is different then usual , they are great to read. I recomend it.

A book of wise sayings
This book...a rather large one...is wonderful and incredibly special since it is a peek into Camus' thoughts. He wrote everything down, afraid he would not remember his thoughts. This book is especially interesting since it has some powerful sayings in it...if you are searching for a good quote to write an essay about, I recommend this book.

NY Supp, Street Law: A Course in Practical

Authors: Lee P. Arbetman, Edward L. O'Brien, and Edward T. McMahon

Street Law: A Course In Practical Law
This books gives a great overview of law related education. Students are introduced to legal issues in the context of real life. It contains practical information for dealing with various legal problems. Students learn how to write to a member of Congress. This book has a section that allows students to consider and decide the outcome of legal situations. They learn variations in local law and prodedures that focus attention on where the student lives. Over all I would suggest this book as a great training tool for the law related class study.

A coherent guide for the average citizen
As a high school student who studied with this textbook, I learned terms and concepts that I could immediately apply to current events. The news on TV and in newspapers about cases were suddenly understandable to me and I felt connected with justice and reason. I recommend "Street Law: A Course in Practical Law" to anyone who wants a detailed and informative, yet comprehensive guide to the law, from torts and criminal law, to business and family law.

The O'Brien Series

Timeless Tales review
By TT reviewer Elaine Leite

Detective Tyler O'Brien is very dedicated to his job. He is the type of detective that puts himself and his family last until he solves the case. He recently sold his own detective agency to go to work with the reputed Henderson and Co. O'Brien has a very good relationship with his boss, you could say it's a love hate relationship. They both try to bring out the best in each other. Henderson knows that he can count on O'Brien to get the job done and solve the case.

The first case that Henderson gives O'Brien is a three-week-old case that involves the killings of two young women. O'Brien takes the case. It takes place in the town where he grew up. Just when you think that there is no way any new evidence can turn up, O'Brien gets a break and solves the case.

Next, O'Brien gets a case that is very brutal. It involves the death of a homeless man who is mutilated and dumped on the train tracks. O'Brien calls on some help and finds out that there was a similar case that happened ten years before. This leaves O'Brien with no leads and no evidence of who could have done this. O'Brien and the boys from Henderson and Co get together to try and find the killer or killers in this horrible death. Days later, with four more bodies dropped off in different cities but with the same brutal mutilations done to them, O'Brien gets some help from a liquor store owner. He gives O'Brien a different look at these brutal homicides. O'Brien goes to check up on this idea that he has. With the killer one step ahead of the detectives, they pull out all the stops. Henderson himself gets involved to help O'Brien take down this madman.

The sarcasm that Henderson and O'Brien trade with each other gives the book the comical edge that it needs. This book shares with you the thoughts of a madman. The O'Brien Series really keeps you rooting for the good guys. I can't wait for book two.

Midwest Book Review - looking forward to book 2!!!
Detective O'Brien works for Henderson and Co. Detective Agency. You are first introduced to him and his colleagues; Henderson, Hal, Rory and Thom as they are investigating a murder case. Detective O'Brien immediately reminded me of the Detectives of long lost famous television shows, like Jack Web from "Dragnet." This certainly was not a bad thing for this reviewer, but rather made for a 'trip down memory lane' read. One I enjoyed.

It is a laid back novel, not fast paced, despite the entire core of it being centered around murder investigations. This is not to say that there was not mystery in this novel, for indeed there was, as Detective O'Brien and his team are faced with a killer who has a cruel sadistic side.

Detective O'Brien tells the stories, from his eyes. After the first murder is solved, the rest of the book brings you into O'Brien's investigation of a crime of mutilated bodies, seemingly of homeless people. Just what were those strange markings on the bodies of the victims? And why was their blood drained out? The author does a good job of bringing you into the swing of the story, but I feel he could be a little more descriptive of characters, surroundings and emotions.

I liked the way Mr. Seifrit brought the murderer into the story and the reason why this person killed. I found it intriguing, and I also liked the way he threw in a few other suspects, allowing you to play detective for a while. This book grows on you! I think those who like a good detective novel will enjoy this one. Looking forward to book 2!

Paediatric Clinical Examination
Published in Paperback by Churchill Livingstone (November, 1997)
Authors: Denis Gill and Niall O'Brien
Average review score:

Good complement to any textbook
Gill and O'Brien's book is a useful little complement to any larger paediatric textbook. It makes the salient point which medical students always forget - it's no use knowing the genetics of ultra-rare syndromes when you don't know the basics of paediatrics, and the most important way to learn is examine lots and lots of children.

Emphazises on a child-centered clinical approach
When I was undertaking Pediatrics rotation during my junior clerkship, I noticed that our Faculty staff was using this handbook, so I was wondering (what is so special about it?) Then I decided to buy it in a Book Exhibition, and discovered the reason later!

This handbook stresses on the development of communication, observational and instincual skills. The approach is essentially clinical i.e. confined largely to symptoms and signs.

The used language is very simple, and the handbook uses numerous graphs, funny pictures, and boxes containing special pediatric terminology with which the student may experience difficulty.

The first few chapters use a child-centered clinical approach towards problem solving in pediatrics.

There are 11 chapters: Introduction, History taking, Approaching children, Examination at different ages, Systems examination, A measure of progress, Hydration and nutrition, Development assessment, Examining excreta, Using your senses, Pediatric tips and topics.

The last chapter (Pediatric tips and topics) is very attractive and contains very useful information. It covers (Normal findings, Tools of the trades, Tricks of the trade, Biological warning signs, Clinical curios, Rules of thumb, Maternal myths, Acrimonious acronyms, A-Z eponyms, Alarm signals, Memorable mnemonics, and others ...)

This handbook comes in 251 pages, and the last edition was the 3rd (1998).

I strongly advise you to buy and read it when you have a free time in the ward.

Richard O'Brien's: The Rocky Horror Show
Published in Paperback by Music Sales Corp (December, 1999)
Authors: Richard O'Brien and Richard O'Briens
Average review score:

Great, but its definately no score...
Well, this book has simple versions of all the songs, some times a little too simple. That would be my only complaint. It features all the songs from the stage show, including Once In A While, and all the verses and little bits cut from the film. It also features some great photos from the 1990 London Production. The music is easy to read, and a lot of fun to play. If you have any questions about the book, be sure to e-mail me on tyson@speedlink.com.au!

Richard O'Brien is pure Genious!
This book was really great, I found out things I never knew about Rocky Horror, and I'v only seen that movie around 100 times! Richard O'Brien is pure Genious!

Shadow of Doubt: A Kali O'Brien Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Kensington Pub Corp (March, 1996)
Author: Jonnie Jacobs
Average review score:

No doubt = very good!
This was a first read for me. Heroine was likeable. Mystery was interesting. Solution was not easy.
Kali goes home to clear up her father's estate without help from her siblings. Her 'boyfriend'was a jerk and you welcomed a new interest for her. Loretta was adorable. An old and dear friend inadvertently nets her into involvement with a murder and its solution.
This book was pleasant, a quick read. I might try another.

A great mystery!
What a great mystery! I like this book very much! Until the end, I couldn't find who the murderer was. It's the second book from Jonnie Jacobs I read, both are great. I will read all the others. (Please excuse my english, I'm French!)

Standard Catalog of American Light-Duty Trucks: Pickups, Panels, Vans All Models 1896-2000 (Standard Catalog of American Light-Duty Trucks, 3rd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (May, 2001)
Authors: James T. Lenzke and Karen E. O'Brien
Average review score:

Most definitive Truck reference currently available.
While I found a few minor errors in some of the model information, I have to give this book a good review. All the makers are there including manufacturers that I had never heard of. There are hours of excellent browsing of the little guys as well as pages of excellent, and usable, information on the big names. My only major complaint with the book is that I am not happy with the paperback format. I would like a book that holds up a little better. Otherwise...Excellent reference work. And fun too!

A great reference book for trucks.
There are not many reference books on light-duty trucks out there, and this is an excellent one for someone researching a certain vehicle. It fits what I was looking for.

Storm Center, Sixth Edition

Author: David M. O'Brien
Average review score:

Get Acquainted with the Supreme Court
If you know only a bare minimum about the Supreme Court, or know a lot, this is an excellent book to supplement that knowledge. It is both an excellent narrative about some of the biggest battles between the Justices themselves and an informational text explaining the ins-and-outs of how a case actually comes to be decided by the Court. All in all, it is well worth reading.

Helpful insight into the court...
This is an excellent examination into the history of the court and the politics that led to its current make-up. O'Brien does a good job making this an interesting and often riviting historical examination.

This has become a valuable tool in my personal and educational understanding of today's court. With the public eye close to the court these days (Presidential Election) the individual and personal examinations that O'Brien has provided on the court has helped me to make my own judgements and predictions as to possible decisions. An excellent purchase for the beginner or well seasoned court watcher.
